Icon Painting: The Path to Eternity

Icon Painting: The Path to Eternity

Orthodox icon painting is a living branch of spiritual art. Through the icon, a person turns to God and in their prayer enters into a dialogue with eternity.

Greece is the heart of icon painting. Here, from master to apprentice, the secrets of the craft have been passed down for centuries. Icon painters were inspired by the works of Hieromonk Dionysius of Fourna, the frescoes of Panselinos, Asprapas, and many other masters. The deep, systematic, and step-by-step description of Byzantine techniques in Konduglu’s books revealed to me the meaning, order, and beauty of this sacred craft, which is created not only by hands but by the whole heart.
If you want, I can help make it sound more formal or poetic too!
Great books come to us like a miracle and a light in the hour of deep darkness. Such a book was Expression (Greek: Ekphrasis) by Fotis Kontoglou. It appeared against the backdrop of long, dark four hundred years when the Ottoman Empire plunged Greece into decline, oblivion, and suffering. Like a solitary prophet, Kontoglou brought forth the sun that illuminated the hidden but not lost sanctuary — Orthodox iconography.
This book became the work of his entire life. It contains not only profound theological reflections on iconography but also detailed practical instructions: how to arrange icons in a church, how to paint lanterns, dragons, donkeys, oxen, cities, and other elements found in sacred images. Expression offers a view of iconography as a living, breathing tradition.
It is not just a manual — it is a spiritual communion. Reading this book, I felt with every page the aroma of Eastern Orthodoxy, its mystery, and its solemnity.
With the publication of this book, the sun rose again. A great revival of iconography began. And today, looking back, we see thousands of burning candles — it is us, the contemporary iconographers, the iconographers of Greece, Mount Athos, and the diaspora. We all draw nourishment from the light that Fotis Kontoglou once kindled. He lifted the candle and said to the world: "Come and receive the light."
